Städtische Reihenhäuser – town houses – entstanden in Europa ab dem 17. Jahrhundert. Im Regelfall zwei- bis dreigeschossig und mit einem Garten auf der Rückseite ausgestattet, bildeten sie den städtischen Block. In Brüssel hat diese bürgerliche Wohnform eine besonders vielgestaltige und bis heute inspirierende Ausformung erfahren. Diese Publikation analysiert 100 ausgewählte Beispiele dieser Typologie, zeigt aber auch ihre Weiterentwicklung in anderen Formen des Wohnungsbaus. So entstehen ein breit angelegtes Panorama sowie eine Architektur- und Entstehungsgeschichte der Stadt Brüssel.

Modern urban terraced houses or row houses emerged in Europe from the 17th century onwards. Usually two to three storeys high and with a garden at the back, they formed the traditional urban block. In Brussels, this bourgeois form of housing took on a particularly varied and inspiring form – including the well-known Art Nouveau residences – and forms the DNA of the city to this day. This publication analyses 100 selected examples illustrating the emergence of the terraced house and its further development in other forms of housing. The result is a broad panorama and a history of the architecture and development of the city of Brussels with its particularly heterogenous cityscape.

Gérald Ledent ist Architekturprofessor an der UCLouvain in Brüssel, wo er sowohl Theorie als auch Entwurf unterrichtet. In seiner Doktorarbeit "Potentiels Relationnels" untersuchte er die Beziehungen zwischen Räumen und Nutzungen in Wohnungen anhand von mehr als 10.000 Wohneinheiten in Brüssel. Ledent spielt eine koordinierende Rolle im Forschungsteam Uses&Spaces, in dem er sich mit der Beziehung zwischen Nutzungen und Räumen in der Architektur sowie mit typologischen Morphologien im Wohnungsbau beschäftigt. Kürzlich war Ledent Mitherausgeber von Sustainable Dwelling (Brüssel, PUL - PU Louvain, 2019), einem Buch, das die sozialen und räumlichen Dimensionen des Wohnens unter dem Aspekt der Nachhaltigkeit untersucht. Er ist auch der Autor von Institutions & the City: The Role of Architecture (Zürich, Park Books, 2022), das die Rolle der Architektur bei der Schaffung und Aufrechterhaltung von sozialen Strukturen untersucht. Ledent verfügt über umfangreiche Erfahrungen als praktizierender Architekt in den Bereichen öffentliche Gebäude und kollektive Wohnsiedlungen in Belgien und im Ausland. Er ist Mitbegründer des Architekturbüros KIS studio (Keep It Simple studio). Seine Forschungsinteressen konzentrieren sich auf die typologische und historische Entwicklung sowie auf neue Formen des städtischen Wohnungsbaus und urbaner Blöcke in verschiedenen Städten. Gérald Ledent is an architecture professor at UCLouvain in Brussels, where he teaches theory as well as in various studios. His PhD thesis, “Potentiels Relationnels”, explores the relations in dwelling between spaces and uses illustrated by an atlas of more than 10,000 housing units in Brussels. Approximately 40 percent of global emissions derive from the construction, operation, and demolition of human settlements. The 21st century must be the century of re-entanglement, where quintessential functions (housing, work, culture, recreation, etc.) are reintegrated within urban spaces; where socioeconomic and ecological systems form a mutually supportive network of networks; and where past, present, and future are perceived as interwoven waves in the river of time. Designing with living materials: thoughts on the paradigm shift and an overview of the state of research What is “Bioprotopia”? Editors Ruth Morrow is Professor of Biological Architecture at Newcastle University, UK. Ruth’s research is largely practice based and encompasses both the material, the social and the ecological. It is driven by an inclusive, feminist ethos and uses tactics of creativity, collaboration and reflection through writing. She has extensive experience in developing material ideas from concept through to commercialisation, resulting in international funding, design awards, exhibitions, chapters, papers, books and citations. She is currently co-head of the interdisciplinary School X at Newcastle University, where she also co-leads the research theme, Responsible Interactions, in the Hub for Biotechnology in the Built Environment. Ben Bridgens is Professor of Regenerative Architecture at Newcastle University, UK, and a founding member of the HBBE. Ben works at the interface of structural engineering, architecture and design, critically examining ‘sustainable’ (bio)technologies and exploring the potential of reimagining low-tech, traditional approaches for the construction and operation of the built environment. Ben led the design of an experimental house on the Newcastle University campus called ‘The OME’ and co-leads the HBBE’s ‘Responsible Interactions’ theme. Louise Mackenzie is an artist, curator and research associate at HBBE at Newcastle University. Her practice explores human relationships with the non-human world and her research has developed a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach to critical engagement with scientific practice. Louise holds a PhD in Fine Art from BxNU Institute of Contemporary Art and is a Director of ASCUS Art and Science in Edinburgh. She is co-founder and curator of an interdisciplinary cinema project, Black Box, and co-founder of Alive Together, an international community for research in human/animal relationships. Wiener Werkstätte: Textiles and their design This book presents new research and archival findings on the textile and fashion designs of the Wiener Werkstätte movement (1903–1932). Textile specialists, art and design historians offer insights into the most important collections and archives in Austria, Switzerland, and the US. The publication explores works by lesser-known female textile artists; the influence of Eastern European folk art, Japanese patterns, and ornamentation textbooks on textile designs; applications in fashion, interior design, film, theater; and marketing strategies used to enter new markets in the US. Nach einer Förderungsprofessur des Schweizerischen Nationalfonds erfolgte die Berufung zur ordentlichen Professorin für Kunstgeschichte und Museologie an der Universität Neuchâtel. Kuratorin und Co-Kuratorin zahlreicher Ausstellungen. Forschungsschwerpunkte: österreichischer und deutscher Expressionismus (Kokoschka, Kirchner, Klee); Wiener Werkstätte; Bauhaus; russische Avantgarde. Marie-Eve Celio-Scheurer promovierte mit summa cum laude in Kunstgeschichte an der Sorbonne. Sie war Stipendiatin der Schweizerischen Akademie der Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften und Forschungsstipendiatin am Deutschen Forum für Kunstgeschichte Paris. Sie lebte in Indien, wo sie als Beraterin für die UNESCO tätig war. Sie arbeitete als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin und Co-Kuratorin am Museum Rietberg in Zürich und hatte eine Gastprofessur an der Fachhochschule Westschweiz inne. Von 2019 bis 2022 leitete sie das Cotsen Textile Traces Study Center am George Washington University Museum / Textile Museum. Seit Dezember 2022 leitet sie die Sammlung von Druckgrafiken und Zeichnungen am Musée d’art et d’histoire in Genf. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen in den Bereichen Jugendstil, Wiener Werkstätte, Indienne-Stoffe und Druckgrafik sowie Kulturaustausch.

She lived in India, where she was a consultant for UNESCO. She worked as a scientific collaborator and co-curator at the Rietberg Museum in Zurich and held the position of guest professor at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland. From 2019 to 2022, she led the Cotsen Textile Traces Study Center at The George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum. Since December 2022, she has been heading the collection of prints and drawings at the Musée d’art et d’histoire in Geneva. Her research areas are in Art Nouveau, Wiener Werkstätte, indiennes and prints, and cultural exchanges.

Ulrike Brandi is an internationally active lighting designer based in Hamburg. Since 1987, she has realised more than 1000 projects (indoor and outdoor spaces) with her office and collaborates with the most important architects of our time. She has published numerous books on the subject of light. As an expert, she speaks and teaches regularly on international stages. A pioneer of architectural history Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky (1897–2000) entered the modernist canon with her “Frankfurt Kitchen.” She is also considered a pioneer of social architecture, a women’s rights activist, and, last but not least, a heroine of the resistance to the Nazi dictatorship. In den vergangenen Jahren haben Baumschlager Eberle Architekten ihren internationalen Erfolgskurs fortgesetzt. In den Jahren 2010 bis 2020 entstanden über 600 Bauten, Projekte und Wettbewerbe, darunter Wohnbauten, Krankenhäuser, Firmenzentralen, Hochschulbauten und nicht zuletzt das Haus 2226, das ganz ohne Klimatechnik auskommt. Das Buch dokumentiert in Form eines kommentierten Werkverzeichnisses in chronologischer Reihenfolge alle Projekte, Wettbewerbe und Studien dieser Jahre. Über 50 realisierte Bauten werden ausführlicher behandelt, 14 der wichtigsten davon werden vertieft mit zahlreichen Bildern, Plänen, Materialien und einem detaillierten Text präsentiert. Darüber hinaus befassen sich drei Essays und drei Interviews mit den zentralen Themen Dichte, Ressourcen und Open Building.

In recent years, Baumschlager Eberle architectural practice has successfully continued its international trajectory. Between 2010 and 2020, around 600 buildings, projects, and competitions have been completed, including housing projects, hospitals, company headquarters, university campuses, and the Haus 2226: an office building without heating system. The book documents in chronological order in the form of an annotated and commented catalogue of works all projects, competitions, and studies of these years. Over 50 completed buildings are comprehensively presented. 14 of the most important projects have an in-depth presentation: with images, plans, and other material as well as a detailed text. In addition, three essays and three interviews deal with the central issues of density, resources, and open building.
