E.1027 war das Haus, das die irische Architektin und Designerin Eileen Gray für sich und ihren jungen Geliebten, den rumänischen Architekten Jean Badovici, 1929 plante und erbaute. Sie entwickelte auch das Mobiliar für das Sommerhaus - der Beistelltisch E.1027 ist heute ein Designklassiker. Die Villa gilt mit ihrer Eleganz und den nautischen Bezügen als Kleinod der Moderne. Auf Einladung Badovicis schuf Freund und Nachbar Le Corbusier dort 1945 acht großformatige Wandgemälde - gegen den Willen der Hausherrin, die allerdings zu dem Zeitpunkt das Haus bereits für immer verlassen hatte. Die Publikation stellt die Gemälde vor und erzählt die ungewöhnliche Geschichte. In 1929, Eileen Gray designed Villa E 1027 for herself and her youthful partner Jean Badovici, but only lived there for three years. Today, the elegant house in Roquebrune-Cap-Mar- tin in southern France is an icon of modernism. In 1937, Le Corbusier discovered the place and the “Maison en Bord de Mer”. Inspired by the genius of the place and the light on the Côte d'Azur, he created a total of eight large-format wall paintings there in 1938 and 1939 onwards, some of which complement the building congenially, while others set counterpoints. In 1952, he built his Cabanon nearby and decorated it with murals as well. Paper and cardboard as sustainable building materials are currently the subject of research and testing. They can be produced inexpensively, are made from renewable raw materials and are completely recyclable. The focus of their application is on temporary uses, such as for transitional schools, emergency shelters or "microhomes". Properly protected from moisture and fire, the material proves to be durable. Design and aesthetic qualities are by no means neglected, as case studies by Pritzker Prize winner Shigeru Ban demonstrate: the Chengdu Elementary School, the Paper Concert Hall in Aquila or the Cardboard Cathedral in Christchurch all provided a sign of hope after devastating earthquakes. This introduction explains the technology of building with cardboard and paper and shows a wide range of examples.

Andrew Watts ist Architekt und Ingenieur und Autor der Modern Construction-Buchreihe. Andrew Watts an architect and engineer and the author of the Modern Construction series of textbooks. He specialises in the architectural and engineering design of large-scale buildings of complex form. Andrew is a founding director of Newtecnic. He is a Fellow of three UK engineering institutions in recognition of his engineering-based designs; the Institution of Civil Engineers; the Institution of Engineering Designers; the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Andrew holds charterships in the UK for architecture and engineering from the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Institution of Engineering Designers. In Brüssel hat diese bürgerliche Wohnform eine besonders vielgestaltige und bis heute inspirierende Ausformung erfahren. Modern urban terraced houses or row houses emerged in Europe from the 17th century onwards. Usually two to three storeys high and with a garden at the back, they formed the traditional urban block. In Brussels, this bourgeois form of housing took on a particularly varied and inspiring form – including the well-known Art Nouveau residences – and forms the DNA of the city to this day. This publication analyses 100 selected examples illustrating the emergence of the terraced house and its further development in other forms of housing. The result is a broad panorama and a history of the architecture and development of the city of Brussels with its particularly heterogenous cityscape.

Gérald Ledent ist Architekturprofessor an der UCLouvain in Brüssel, wo er sowohl Theorie als auch Entwurf unterrichtet. In seiner Doktorarbeit "Potentiels Relationnels" untersuchte er die Beziehungen zwischen Räumen und Nutzungen in Wohnungen anhand von mehr als 10.000 Wohneinheiten in Brüssel. Ledent spielt eine koordinierende Rolle im Forschungsteam Uses&Spaces, in dem er sich mit der Beziehung zwischen Nutzungen und Räumen in der Architektur sowie mit typologischen Morphologien im Wohnungsbau beschäftigt. Kürzlich war Ledent Mitherausgeber von Sustainable Dwelling (Brüssel, PUL - PU Louvain, 2019), einem Buch, das die sozialen und räumlichen Dimensionen des Wohnens unter dem Aspekt der Nachhaltigkeit untersucht. Er ist auch der Autor von Institutions & the City: The Role of Architecture (Zürich, Park Books, 2022), das die Rolle der Architektur bei der Schaffung und Aufrechterhaltung von sozialen Strukturen untersucht. Ledent verfügt über umfangreiche Erfahrungen als praktizierender Architekt in den Bereichen öffentliche Gebäude und kollektive Wohnsiedlungen in Belgien und im Ausland. Er hat am Kunstgeschichtlichen Institut der Emory University, USA, geforscht und Initiativen für den öffentlichen Wohnungsbau in Atlanta untersucht (2020). His research interests focus on the typological and historical evolution, as well as new forms, of urban housing and urban blocks in various cities. He is an architect who graduated from Politecnico di Torino, Italy (2012) and holds a PhD from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland (2018) with a dissertation investigating the interwar housing typologies in Vienna and Frankfurt am Main. He was a visiting researcher at the Art History Department of Emory University, USA, to study the architectural design of public-housing initiatives in Atlanta (2020). Alongside peer-reviewed articles and contributions to international conferences, he is the author of the publication L’intelligence des formes: Le projet de logements collectifs à Vienne et Francfort (Geneva, MétisPresses, 2019).

Ein wachsendes, lebendes Haus, ein Gebäude aus einer Pflanze scheint ein Widerspruch in sich zu sein. Dennoch wussten schon die Khasi in Ostindien die Luftwurzeln von Gummibäumen zu Fußgängerbrücken zu verbinden und in Süddeutschland bildeten über Jahrhunderte hinweg Tanzlinden den Dorfmittelpunkt. Daran anknüpfend widmet sich die Baubotanik dem Entwerfen mit Bäumen. Realisierte Bauten, Versuchsreihen, Entwurfsstudien und visionäre Konzepte weisen den Weg zu einer neuen grünen Architektur. Diese Einführung geht auf die botanischen Wachstumsgesetze ein, die die Bauten leiten und legt die Grundlagen des Konstruierens mit lebenden Bäumen dar. Das Buch regt zu einem ganz neuen Blick auf Architektur an, die gleichsam zu einem Teil der Stadtnatur wird.

A growing, living house, a building made of a plant seems to be a contradiction in terms. Nevertheless, the Khasi in eastern India already knew how to connect the branches of rubber trees to form footbridges, and in southern Germany dance lime trees formed the centre of villages for centuries. Following on from this, the new discipline of Baubotanik is dedicated to designing with trees. Built projects, prototypes and visionary concepts point the way to a new green architecture. This introduction shows the possibilities of such living constructions and goes into the botanical growth laws that guide the design. The basics of constructing with trees are presented. The book encourages a whole new look at architecture that becomes part of urban nature.
